Beautiful Football

by popcharts @ Friday, Mar. 10, 2006 - 00:22:36

So this is what it's all about. Playing beautiful football - ask yourself, why do you support the team you do? If you just wanted to win stuff all the time, then you'd be supporting whoever was top of the league each season. Football is more enjoyable when it is unpredictable, football is about winning and losing, football can be beautiful. We need players to be allowed to flick and turn and stepover and back heel without feeling that they will be set upon by a pack of wolves if they don't quite pull it off. We need managers and coaches to empower players to express themselves. Most professional players can do all of these tricks, and regularly do them on the training ground, but they keep it locked away during match day in case the boss doesn't like it and drops them next week. This is the Eric Cantona Nike ad for you to see what I am ranting on about.

I think you're quite right about English/British football. There needs to be more emphasis on technical ability and the art within the game. Generally, English players have many other strong attributes but it's hard to think of highly techincal stars who focus on the beauty in the game. The place is just not producing any beautifulgamers...

Your not kidding. When we get a go on Pro Evo or Fifa we don't track back, or play with a midfield destroyer, we get on the ball try and take everyone on and score an overhead kick. Football is all about entertainment and supporters pay so much money to watch their team week in week out, so a little bit of entertainment wouldn't hurt. I can't stand the motto: Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing!!! Rubbish, we should be able to applaud and enjoy a great game whatever the result.
